He later became the pioneer Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund. He was sworn in as Executive Governor of Sokoto State on 29 May 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. His administration is organised around the 9-Point SMART Innovative Agenda: security, religious affairs, economy, education, healthcare, agriculture, water supply, youth empowerment and local government autonomy. In May 2026, APC stakeholders across the 244 wards affirmed him as the party’s consensus candidate for a second term. He seeks re-election in 2027 on a joint ticket with the Deputy Governor, Engr.
